VOLCANOES

Introduction
Volcanoes are holes in the Earth's surface where magma (molten rock) forces its way up from beneath the ground and escapes. The magma is called lava once it reaches the surface - it can erupt in a violent explosion, or more slowly like a flowing river. There are about 1,500 active volcanoes in the world.
